Across Northern Uganda’s Nilotica shea landscape, shea shells remain a largely underutilized biomass waste, with an estimated up to 500,000 metric tons potentially going to waste rather than being put to productive use. Okere Shea Cooperative is exploring an opportunity to transform this abundant residue into biochar, creating value from waste while supporting carbon removal, soil restoration and our wider regenerative agriculture and carbon insetting initiatives. We are currently undertaking feasibility studies to identify appropriate technologies, production systems and carbon-credit pathways, with biochar production targeted to begin in 2027.
